Christmas Cheer with No Chaser

Straight No Chaser will bring a large serving of Christmas Cheer to the Van Wezel as its Holiday show will include songs from their two highly successful holiday releases.  These uniquely stylized arrangements will be added to the group’s new presentation With A Twist which opens Thursday, December 22 at 8:00 pm.

This group of ten highly talented singers clearly brings new definition to the phrase, “male a capella group.”  In an era when so much pop music is the  product of digital processing and vocal pro-tooling, Straight No Chaser is the real deal! The captivating sound of ten unadulterated human voices coming together to make extraordinary music  is moving people in a fundamental sense.  And all this with a dose of humor.  Originally formed over a dozen years ago while students together at Indiana University (which is regarded as having one of the top music schools in the world) the group reassembled and reemerged as a phenomenon.

They have established a massive fan base with over 20 million viewers on YouTube and their personal appearance tours have proven them popular music’s premier  “innovative” vocal group.  Straight No Chaser approaches its musical arrangement vision with “trial and error.”  Ideas are thrown out and debated..sometimes vigorously.  They jazz with new harmonies and textures, with a goal of finding the right “twists” without losing the identifiable character of the songs.

The concept of taking the sound of musical instruments and the human voice and incorporating them in an a cappella format brought popular/classic music to a whole new incarnation which has been called “brilliant, fresh and totally compelling.”  With A Twist is opening up new territory for the group. Their primary goal is to get back on the  road and start singing their material to live audiences. “As we perform live, the songs take on a life of their own, that’s what is most exciting…to get this stuff out there live and see how people react and see what they like.  That determines our future focus and enables us to add new direction to future albums.”

P.S. The group was originally formed as “10 guys who happened to be good friends who also liked to sing.” The members were carefully chosen for their vocal talent as well as for their personality. Straight No Chaser immediately established itself  among other a cappella groups with its contemporary repetoire and dynamic approach.  They quickly began headlining concerts and then as their fame spead, national tours began.  Albums followed as their bookings increased but something unusual then happened.  Their comradiere was so intense that when the original members graduated in 1999 they chose replacements with future generations of ambitious IU singers and established Straight No Chaser as an ongoing group on campus. More than 50 have passed throught the group’s ranks so far.  Such was the impact Straight No Chaser made at IU that the school hosted a 10th anniversary reunion concert for the original group. Randy Stein, Charlie Mechling, Jerome Collins, David Roberts and Walter Chase remain from the original group formed 12 years ago.
